Why is insurance important? Let’s look at five key reasons.  ↓

Road accidents - can happen anywhere at any time. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) cited the highest number of fatal cases at 93% in low- to middle-income cities and countries. In the Philippines, that’s about 12,000 deaths resulting from road traffic crashes every year. The WHO figures also attribute road-related injuries as the leading cause of death in children and adults aged 5 to 29.

Indeed, the alarming number of injuries and deaths due to car accidents is a major concern for vehicle owners. It highlights the importance of being a responsible motorist who prioritizes road safety and protection, and one way to guarantee this is by having car insurance.

How Does Car Insurance Work?

Car insurance works both ways. In case you find yourself in a car mishap that harms another person or damages their car or any public property on the road, you can use your car insurance coverage to reimburse the concerned party for the damage you’ve caused. But, if you’re on the receiving end of a vehicular accident that caused damages to your car, your insurance company will pay for your losses.

Therefore, car insurance acts as your protection when you find yourself in a financial liability that may arise from car accidents. Since car-related hazards come in many forms, different types of car insurance and car insurance cost can provide you with varying levels of financial protection.

By choosing the right car insurance, you can rest assured that you’ll have the means to handle the potential costs of vehicular incidents.

In this post, you’ll learn the ins and outs of making claims on your car insurance in the Philippines, starting with the different types of road accidents and applicable insurance coverage.

5 TYPES OF ROAD ACCIDENTS

1. Side-impact collisions

What it is: This is when a vehicle crashes into the side of another vehicle running alongside it. The collision may also follow a T-bone crash pattern, where a car running through a stoplight impacts the side of another vehicle that’s crossing an intersection with the green light on.

What insurance coverage is applicable: Collision coverage can cover the cost of repairing or replacing your car when hit by another car.

2. Crashes while merging

What it is: Changing lanes on the road can cause one car to sideswipe another, resulting in a crash or collision.

What insurance coverage is applicable: Besides collision coverage, another coverage called property damage liability can pay for your car repair or replacement. The coverage of the driver at fault for the accident can also be used.

3. Rear-end accidents

What it is: Also known as tailgating, this collision occurs because one car is following the other too closely.

What insurance coverage is applicable: Whether or not you’re the cause of the accident, you can use your car insurance’s collision coverage. If you were the one who tailgated, you would not be able to use the property damage liability coverage.

In case the collision caused you to hurt or injure someone, the bodily injury liability coverage of your policy will take care of the medical or, in a worst-case scenario, funeral expenses of that person.

4. Head-on crashes

What it is: In this type of accident, two vehicles from opposite directions of the road collide. This type of collision may also mean running into something that’s in the way of the car, like animals, poles, trees, or road signs. Head-on crashes usually create an impact so strong that the cars’ safety features fail to protect drivers and passengers from sustaining severe injuries.

What insurance coverage is applicable: Any collision coverage, property damage liability coverage, or bodily injury liability coverage is appropriate if you’re not at fault. Having personal injury coverage will also help you cover hospitalization expenses for yourself and your passengers.

If your car requires large-scale repairs after the accident, loss of use coverage will let you reimburse your transportation expenses while you’re unable to use your car. Otherwise, compulsory third-party liability (CTPL) or voluntary third-party liability can cover the financial costs of whatever damage the accident caused.

5. Multi-vehicle collisions

What it is: This involves three or more vehicles hitting one another. The danger in this type of accident is when a car receives multiple impacts from the other cars at different angles or positions.

What insurance coverage is applicable: Again, depending on who’s at fault, the same types of car insurance mentioned above can cover damages resulting from the accident.

Note that comprehensive car insurance will provide coverage for your financial needs for all types of accidents, regardless of whether you were the cause of the accident or if it’s the other way around.

What to Do After a Road Accident

Check yourself and others for injuries.

As you check yourself and your passengers, look for visible signs of injuries. If anyone is injured, call for immediate help or have someone do it for you. But avoid moving if you’re seriously injured—instead, wait until emergency personnel arrives at the scene of the accident.

Call the police.

Major accidents require you to notify the police who will inspect the site, interview the concerned drivers or passengers, and create a report of what happened. Request a copy of the report for insurance claims purposes.

Check for damages on all concerned vehicles.

This is when you survey each vehicle for scratches, dents, cracks, distorted parts, or any other form of damage. Take pictures of these, as well as the cars’ positions, to show law enforcement personnel and insurance companies how the accident happened and help them assess who’s responsible for what.

Just be careful not to let yourself come into contact with the cars under inspection, as you want to preserve the integrity of the cars’ condition after the accident.

Document the accident.

You can do your part in documenting the details of the accident to complement the investigation report of police responders.

Make sure you have the names of the driver and accompanying passengers and their contact information, as this will help make future communications easier between you and the other party. Don’t forget to collect these details with the police report and photos you’ve taken.

Notify your insurer.

When notifying your insurer, it’s best to contact your insurance agent directly from the scene of the accident. Your agent might give you special instructions regarding information or documents you need to secure to facilitate the claims process quickly and smoothly.

Common Car Insurance Coverage

Liability coverage: This comprises two components, namely, bodily injury liability and property damage liability, which enable you to pay for the costs of injuring someone or damaging another person’s property while you’re out on the road driving.

Collision insurance coverage: This covers your car’s repair or replacement costs resulting from an accident involving another car or road obstacles like a pothole. The amount of the coverage may be equal to your car’s actual cash value minus deductible fees stated in your policy.

Comprehensive insurance: Despite being labeled as comprehensive, this type of insurance coverage doesn’t necessarily protect you from all forms of accident-related damages. However, the coverage extends beyond accidents, as events like theft, fire, and natural disasters make your car eligible for car insurance claims.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance: Not all motorists have car insurance, unfortunately. While some of them do, the coverage may not be enough to pay for the damage you or your car may incur from an accident. In such cases, uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance can cover your car repair costs or hospitalization expenses.

Medical payments coverage: This helps pay for costs of hospital stays, checkups, X-rays, surgery, and other forms of medical care you or your passengers may need if you find yourself in an accident.

Personal injury protection insurance: This is similar to medical payments coverage, but it includes coverage for related expenses because of your injuries. These incidentals may consist of your daily living allowance if you’re unable to work and earn after the accident.

GAP insurance: Also known as guaranteed auto protection covers the balance of your car loan in case your car is stolen or incurs a total loss. This is extremely useful, especially since comprehensive coverage typically pays only the car’s current value and not the entire amount left on your car loan.

Is Your Car Insured?

As a car owner, crashes and collisions are the last things you’d want to encounter when you go out on the road, but sometimes accidents just happen. Even if you practice traffic rules as best as you can, other drivers or road blockages may present challenges that can lead to unforeseen accidents.

Try to remain calm if you find yourself involved in a car accident and have medical and law enforcement personnel assist you in coping with the emergency. Last but not least, let your insurance do the work of providing a safety net for unforeseen accidents.
